For most birthmoms, the only time spent with their baby is during their  hospital stay.  Therefore, the hospital experience should be as smooth as possible, giving the birthmom a chance to say hello and goodbye to her baby.  Since becoming active in the adoption community, I have heard horror stories from birthmoms who were treated rudely by hospital staffs and heard heart warming stories of nurses who went out of their way for birthmoms.

I don't believe that most nurses and doctors are purposely trying to treat birthmoms badly.  I think they are unsure of what to do or say. Based on my research through surveys, I have written a hospital action plan and medical brochure.

The medical brochure is geared towards the staff of a hospital or doctors office who may be caring for a patient who is making an adoption plan. The brochure educates them on different adoption terms, a brief adoption history, explains things to do and not do, and more.

The hospital action plan is written for women who are making adoption plans. It covers all aspects of the hospital experience, from pre-labor to walking out the doors of the hospital. The hospital action plan is a fill in the blank form that allows a potential birthmother to write in her wishes and custom tailor her adoption plan to her own needs, wishes, and desires. The hospital action plan can then be shared with the adoptive parents and the medical team so that everyone is on the same page about what is expected to go on during the birth of the baby and hospital stay.

The medical brochure includes:

bullet Definitions of adoption terms such as relinquishment, triad, etc
bullet A letter to medical professionals from a birthmother
bullet Suggestions for the hospital staff to help a birthmom have a positive hospital experience
bullet "Do nots" Things not to do or say to a birthmom
bullet A brief adoption history.

The hospital action plan is a fill in the blank guide stating what a birthmom desires are for her hospital stay.  It includes the following subjects:

bullet Who the birthmom would like in the delivery room with her
bullet If she would like to hold her baby
bullet If she would like the baby to room in with her
bullet And much more!
