Creating a Letter with Song Lyrics
by Brie Marion

Brie Marion creatively used lyrics from her favorite songs related to adoption and motherhood to create a meaningful letter for her daughter. One day, she’ll pass along the letter along with a CD containing all the songs from which she used lyrics. Brie is toying with the idea of doing this yearly with songs that made her think of her daughter through out that particular year.

Brie shares her special letter with lyrics to her daughter with us below and encourages you to give this a try with some of your favorite songs that make you think of your child.

My dearest Little One,

I want you to know that even though I’m not with you,

“You're still a part of everything I do. You're on my heart just like a tattoo”

“You make me feel alive. You are my highest high. All I can do is smile when I look in my little girl's eyes.”

“I've never had a dream come true, till the day that I found you. Even though I pretend that I've moved on you'll always be my baby. I never found the words to say you're the one I think about each day, and I know no matter where life takes me to, a part of me will always be with you.”

I hope that you never doubt that

“Somebody wants you. Somebody needs you. Somebody dreams about you every single night”

I pray for you every night and you know that

A mother's prayer can move a mountain. A mother's prayer is pure as gold, and the angels up in heaven make sure she gets heard up there 'cause there's nothing that's more precious to God's ear than a mother's prayer.”

Still, there will be tough times and

“Sometimes life's not fair, but if you hang in there, you're gonna see that sometimes bad is good. We just have to believe things work out like they should Life has no guarantees, but always loved by me.”

“But more than anything, more than anything: My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to; your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small; you never need to carry more than you can hold. And while you're out there getting where you're getting to, I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too. Yeah, this is my wish.”

You’re growing so fast and soon it will time for you to

“Spread your wings and prepare to fly, for you have become a butterfly.”

But it is late now, time to sleep. Just one more thing before you drift off to sleep. Always know that

If my heart had wings I would fly to you and lie beside you as you dream.”

“And even though I know how very far apart we are it helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star”

“My love will fly to you each night on angel’s wings. Godspeed. Sweet dreams.”

Love,

Your Birthmom, Brie

Children’s Book Review of Max and the Adoption Day Party
By Adria F. Klein
Review by Lani Downing

I’m always looking for books to send my birth daughter and adoption related books are hard to find.  I recently came across the children's book, Max and the Adoption Day Party by Adria F. Klein.

Max and the Adoption Day Party is a short, twenty page book for early readers. In the book the main character Max is invited to his friend Jose’s adoption party. In a very simple way Jose explains to Max (and the reader) how he is adopted and just how normal he and his family are even though he is adopted.

I liked this book for my birth daughter because it’s simple enough that she could read it to herself or aloud to someone else. And although it’s not identical to her own adoption story, as an adoptee, I think she will be able to identify with Jose in some ways. Perhaps she can share this book with her friends or class mates and help others to understand and learn about adoption.

Creating a Pregnancy Scrapbook
by Coley Strickland

Have you thought about or started making a pregnancy scrapbook? You may not feel like making one or feel that you should be making one if you are experiencing an unplanned but as minor as it may sound this is one of my regrets. Even though your pregnancy is unplanned, I encourage you to still try and make the most of it try to enjoy being pregnant whenever possible. Easier said than done, though, right?

Regardless of what you ultimately decide about either making an adoption plan or a parenting plan, a pregnancy scrapbook can be a great way to remember your pregnancy as well as a neat keepsake item for your child in the future. Plus, it could also relieve some stress by channeling some energy into something positive. Why not invite some girlfriends over, make a “girl night in “out of it, and crop till you drop!

Making a pregnancy scrapbook doesn’t have to be as involved as it may sound. It doesn’t have to be fancy or elaborate (unless you want to do fancy and elaborate) but rather a place to record pregnancy milestones and photos.

What should you include in a pregnancy scrapbook? Anything related to pregnancy of course! Be creative! Anything goes; you are only limited by your imagination!

Some ideas of things you could include in a pregnancy scrapbook:

  • Ultrasound photos

  • Belly progression photos

  • Photo of pregnancy test

  • Record of stats from each doctors visit (weight, belly growth, etc)

  • Confirmation of pregnancy sheet from doctor

  • Calendar pages that you jot down pregnancy milestones on (like when you felt the first kick)

  • Memorabilia (such as labels from the foods you were craving)

  • Plans you may be making regarding adoption such as when you met the adoptive parents, a photo from that meeting, journaling about how you chose them, etc

  • Journaling about your thoughts and feelings

  • Anything else that is meaningful to yourself or that you feel may be meaningful to your child one day!

Prayers Please: We added this section because so many of you have asked us to remember you or your loved ones in our prayers. We have never wanted to force religion on anyone, so if you don't pray, then skip this section and go on to the next! And if you do pray - add the people listed here to your prayer list. Email Amy with your prayer requests.

"Thank you for the thoughts, cards, phone calls, etc. about my vision. Please continue to keep this in your prayers as I travel to Atlanta this month to meet with new specialists at the Medical University there." ~ Coley Strickland

"I have to give a 20 minute presentation on Kaylee's birthday this year. I just need to make sure that my emotions are in check and that I can get through the class with out having crying spells. Also pray that I will not be an emotional wreck the closer her birthday comes. Not many people at my work know about Kaylee and I know that my boss would completely not understand and if I tried to tell him he would make fun of me behind my back to my managers." ~ Amy S.

Birthday Buds: If you would like to have your birthday or your birth child's birthday mentioned in this section, please email the birth date, your name or your child's name, to Amy by the 25th of the month before your birthday. For example, if your child's birthday is November 21, then you need to email it to Amy by October 21st. So email Amy with yours or your child's birthdays. (Note: You can click on the names below to email them or send an e-card.)

Destiny's son Dustin will celebrate his 7th birthday on January 11th.
Alicia's daughter, Brittany, will celebrate her 15th birthday on January 11th.

Amy's daughter, Kaylee, celebrates her 5th birthday on January 31st.

Founder's Corner: A little section to help keep you up to date with Coley and Lani as they share their lives, their thoughts, and what they're doing with BirthMom Buds.

Dear Friends,

I hope that all of you had a peaceful holiday season and are now getting back into the swing of things as we enter 2009.

As one year ends and another begins many of us sit and reflect on what happened in the past year and what we wish to happen in the upcoming year. I encourage you take a few minutes, sit down, and journal about what has happened in the past year and write about what you wish to happen in the New Year.

Save what you write, in the future it will be a nice to have and read over to see how far you've come, where you currently are, and where you are going.

Happy New Year!

~ Coley Strickland

Do you Feel Me?
by Destiny K.

You'll be One soon
My heart will be with you
Will you feel me?
You'll walk soon, but I won't see
Will you feel me?
When you run and trip
I won't be there to comfort you
But my love will
Will you feel me?
I want to kiss you so badly
But I won't be the Mother kissing you
Will you feel that I want to?
I gave birth to you
But I'm not the mother holding you
I love you with all my heart
Will you always know that?
I won't be the mother kissing and singing to you
But in my heart you are always in my arms
I will always love you Dustin
and I pray you'll always feel me.
